I often think about the words that I use to describe myself and wonder how I can better express my idea of who I am. In a class I once took, we did an exercise where we were asked to write the top five labels that we think others use to describe us, and then we were told to make a second list of the top five labels that we use to describe ourselves. This exercise has stuck with me for some time, and I think that a big reason why it resonated so deeply was because I realized that the labels I let others use about me are not the ones that I would choose for myself.

I’m not sure that anyone who knows me would call me a writer when introducing me to a friend, even though I have been obsessed with writing ever since I was old enough to understand that words could be communicated solely on paper. So, I’m going to use this About page to introduce myself properly in a way that I’ve never been brave enough to do before.

I am a writer. I have always been a writer; my mother still laughs about the time I was three and had a melt down because I couldn’t get my little fingers to properly form a G with my pencil. I remember when I was about four or five and would force whatever adult was watching me to sit down and write out picture books that I dictated to them because I was still too young to write in complete sentences. As I’ve gotten older, the desire to find readers for my writing has grown, and that’s where the idea to create a blog originated.

The purpose of this blog is to show you the behind-the-scenes of my life. As with any piece of writing, it will never be perfect and I’m sure every post could be revised hundreds of times, but this space isn’t about being perfect; it’s about being myself. I hope you feel that you can be yourself here too.
